Our names are James and Katie and we are currently students at the University of Nottingham’s School of Veterinary Medicine and Science. The following survey is part of a PhD research project investigating decision making in critical cases of equine colic and has been kindly funded by the University of Nottingham and World Horse Welfare.

As the final part of our current colic research, this survey aims to establish what horse owners know about colic and what they would do if their horse became severely ill. With this in mind we would like to invite you to take part in the following short survey, which has been piloted and should take around 10-20 minutes to complete. The final part of this survey will provide you with up to date evidence on colic management, treatment and survival, which we hope will be extremely useful for horse owners everywhere!

This research study has been approved by the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science’s ethics committee. All information will remain anonymous, confidential and stored on a password protected database. Anonymised information will be submitted as part of Katie’s final PhD thesis. Results of this study may also be published in relevant scientific publications, presented at research conferences or shared with select veterinary practices in order to ensure horse owners are being fully supported.

Your experiences and thoughts are essential to our research and we greatly appreciate you taking the time to help us. It is hoped that the information you provide us with will help us to better understand how horse owners prepare and react to cases of colic. If you have any questions, or would like further information, please do not hesitate to contact us using the details provided below.

Thank you again for your help.
