Page 1: Hello and thank you!

Hello and thank you for your interest in my research study! My name is Rebecca Dewey and I am a researcher at the University of Nottingham.

I am looking for healthy volunteers aged 30 to 50 years who either:

  • have normal hearing

OR

  • have suspected noise-induced hearing loss.

The study that I am conducting is trying to work out if we can see the consequences of a person’s past exposure to noise in MRI scans of their brain and nerves.  If you participate in the study, you will be paid an inconvenience allowance of £10 per hour, and you will also be reimbursed up to £15 per appointment for your travel costs.

If you decide to volunteer for this study, you will need to attend two appointments:

  1. A screening session, lasting around 2 hours, in which someone will measure lots of different aspects of your hearing and ask you questions about your past noise exposure. We will have a look at year ears and ask you to fill in some questionnaires. From these tests, we will determine whether we will be able to invite you to come back and have an MRI scan on a subsequent visit.
  2. If you then decide to proceed with the study, you will need come back for your MRI scan, which will last approximately an hour (total session length: 1 and a half hours to allow for getting changed etc.), and we will talk to you throughout.

Sessions will take place at the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre on Nottingham University Park Campus, postcode for satnav is NG7 2QL.

If you agree to take part, you can still withdraw from the study at any time if you do not want to continue and you do not have to give your reasons for withdrawing. You will get paid for any appointments you attend, regardless of whether you complete the study.
